The monasteries of Ribeira Sacra: living history between rivers and mountains.
One of the greatest treasures of Ribeira Sacra is its ancient monasteries, many hidden among forests, canyons, and vineyards. These places are not just part of the landscape — they also tell the spiritual, artistic, and cultural history of this land over more than a thousand years.
During the Middle Ages, many monks and hermits settled in this area in search of seclusion, founding cenobial communities that, over time, became important religious and intellectual centers. That's where the name “Ribeira Sacra” comes from — it literally means “sacred riverbank.”
Today you can visit some of the most emblematic monasteries, such as:
Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil, now a parador and surrounded by spectacular forest.
San Pedro de Rocas, carved into the rock and considered one of the oldest in Galicia.
Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil, tucked among chestnut trees, with unique views over the canyon.
Oseira, Xunqueira, Ferreira … each one with its own story, architecture, and soul.

On the banks of the Miño River, the water not only shapes the landscape: it also invites you to care for yourself, to pause, and to enjoy its thermal properties. Since Roman times, these lands have been known for their hot springs — ideal for relaxation and reconnection.
The Thermal Route of the Miño combines nature, culture, and wellness, with several spots where you can soak in open-air thermal springs, spas, and uniquely beautiful settings:
The Prexigueiro Thermal Baths (Ribadavia): nestled in nature, with stone pools and a peaceful atmosphere.
The Outariz and A Chavasqueira Springs (Ourense): some are free, others have complete facilities.
Natural pools and thermal spots along the Miño River for a relaxing break.
After a walk, a wine tasting, or a day in the vineyards, there’s nothing better than a thermal bath to complete the experience.

Few things capture the soul of Ribeira Sacra better than its vineyards hanging over the rivers and the wine born from them. This is known as heroic viticulture, because of the difficulty of working on these almost vertical slopes. It has shaped both the landscape and the character of its people over centuries.
The Ribeira Sacra Wine Route invites you to:
Visit charming wineries, many run by small family growers.
Taste unique wines, especially varieties like Mencía, Godello, and Brancellao.
Participate in guided tastings, pairings, winery tours or even the harvest (depending on season).
Explore viewpoints, river routes, and small villages steeped in wine culture.
Whether you’re a wine lover or just curious, this route is an experience that artfully combines flavor, landscape, and tradition.

Walking through Ribeira Sacra is one of the best ways to connect with its essence. Its trails pass through oak and chestnut forests, terraced vineyards, old footpaths, and riversides where the silence is only broken by birdsong or the murmur of water.
One of our favorites: the PR-G 179 “Río Miño Route”, an ~11 km circular path that winds through native forests, natural springs, and offers breathtaking views over the Miño. It’s of moderate difficulty — ideal for a relaxed day hike, allowing time to pause, reflect, and enjoy.
Along the way, you’ll find:
Shaded stretches perfect for summer.
Corners with history and traditional architecture.
Spectacular views of vineyards and the Miño valley that feel like they’ve jumped out of a painting.
Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and maybe a camera — you’ll be stopping to take photos more than you think.

One of the most magical ways to discover Ribeira Sacra is from the water. Catamaran tours allow you to drift into the canyons of the Sil and Miño rivers, gliding past vertical cliffs and perched vineyards that take your breath away.
If that experience appeals to you, here are a few options:

Important tip: it's always best to book in advance and confirm schedules, as they may vary depending on weather, season, or demand.
🏖️Riverside Beaches
If you want a slower moment between hikes and wine tastings, make sure to stop by one of the peaceful river beaches.
These are calm, natural spots — perfect for relaxing, reading a book, taking a dip, or having a picnic.
One of our favorites is Playa da Cova, on the Miño riverbank — it offers amazing views, shade, and a relaxing ambiance.
Ribeira Sacra is much more than landscapes: it’s a constant invitation to reconnect with nature, with time, and with yourself. Let yourself be carried away.
